Considering online school? Start here!
Students and families who choose online learning are taking responsibility for their education.
For elementary students, the adult at home will be their main instructor, with help from a PTRA teacher. The teacher provides the curriculum, assignments, and a daily 30-minute online lesson. The assignments are mainly in workbooks with 30-60 minutes of work online. Families help their students work through the assignments, making learning a team effort!
Middle school students do their classwork online and meet with their teacher/advisor twice a week online. They take the same classes and work for about the same amount of time as they would in person–about 5 hours each day. They need to be able to work independently, be self-motivated, and stay focused. And they need an adult to keep them on track and hold them responsible for getting their assignments done.
Online learning puts the responsibility on the student and their family. In a traditional classroom, you can learn a little just by being there. In online school, you have to choose to learn every day.
Online learning is a good fit for students who–
- Can work independently and responsibly
- Can motivate themselves and take ownership of their learning
- Will commit to doing the work
- Have adult support at home
- Have support socially or prefer to work independently
- Have reliable internet access
- Have the basic skills to use a Chromebook and the internet
The more effort you put in, the more you’ll grow and succeed! If you think you’re a good fit for online school, contact us at 541-897-5108 or ptra@phoenix.k12.or.us. It’s an exciting way to learn, and we’re here to support you every step of the way!
